Where the River Disappears

The fog blurs my mind, my sense of smell, and my eyesight. Like looking without prescription glasses, the river is blurred like an old photograph, with subtle shifts in shades of grey, light and dark, as if painted by the hand of the great Monet. The buildings and the trees are silhouetted black, two-dimensional. The river yawns in every direction, with only the fisherman and boats breaking the view, the water so vast it disappears into the eternal white. What does it smell like? That of the damp wooden benches, or the trees not yet in bloom. It is early; without the traffic, the air smells as fresh as the colorless meadow in spring. Footsteps echo as if in an abandoned cave, whose grey walls cannot be seen or touched. She walks out of the whiteness like a ghost, bringing color to the colorless space, the smell of spring to the dampened vastness. When her footsteps disappear in the distance, like a colorblind man, I am left again with a bleak picture: a black-and-white photograph, a damp smell, and the vastness of white and grey. She had the only beating heart in many square kilometers of space.
